Kaya Mezhukupuratti (Raw Banana)

Kaya Mezhukupuratti
This is one of my favourite dish for lunch. Maybe because it is a 'banana' and bananas are my favorite. I usually hate eating rice but if this dish is in our table, some unknown interest comes out. I like it when its light-sweet touches my tastebuds and I used to be the one to finish it off.
This recipe has also taught me something lately.. Size does matter ! Usually I used to prepare this in normal way by chopping into small pieces. But after watching a tv cookery show, I started cutting them a bit different .. And guess what? It did enhance the taste just like icing on the cake!

Ingredients :
Mezhukupuratty
  1. Pacha Kaya / Raw Banana : 2 no.s nearly 200gm ; sliced & chopped (See note)
  2. Shallots : 4-5 ; crushed
  3. Garlic : 2 pods ; crushed
  4. Red Chilles : 2 , crushed
  5. Turmeric Powder : 1/4 tbsp
  6. Oil : 2-3 tbsp
  7. Mustard Seeds : 1/2 tsp
  8. Curry Leaves : a few
Method :
  1. Chop raw banana as told in 'Notes'
  2. Heat Oil in a pan . Add mustard seeds and add curry leaves after it splutters
  3. Add crushed shallots, garlic & red chillies and saute until they get cooked
  4. Put Turmeric powder and salt and let it be sauted till the smell is gone
  5. Now add the chopped raw banana to this. Mix together and add 1/4 cup water. Its better to add less water and cook it covered. After sometime you will have to stir so that it dont get burnt. ie stir fry it until bananas get cooked and is soft.
  6. Serve hot with rice for lunch!
Note:
  • Cut each banana width wise into 1 inch size. And slice these 1 inch chunks length wise of medium thickness so that you get long pieces. See picture.
